About Us

The Speech and Debate Society at the University of Arkansas has a rich history.

Originally founded in 1886 as The Garland Society, a literary organization with the intent to discuss and partake in “readings, essays, original stories, impromptu speeches, orations, discussions on current topics, and formal and informal debates,” Speech and Debate at the University of Arkansas celebrates 140 years of excellence. The existing iteration of our organization began in 2021, focusing on competition within the International Public Debate Association circuit, as well as competing in AFA/NFA Individual Events. The team has earned a total of 464 awards in just four years of reactivity, and boasts a growing team of 35+ bright young minds.

Our students come from all backgrounds and levels of experience, whether bringing years of training to the table, or no experience at all. Our team is unique, welcoming, and warm. We are a family, and we can’t wait for you to join us.
